Your Council

Funding

The Buller District Council provides and/or administers a range of funding to community organisations or groups throughout the Buller district. Some are Councils own grants, administered and disbursed at its own discretion. Others are administered on behalf of external organisations. These require the Council to meet the funding guidelines that have been laid down by these bodies.

Council has a Communities Grants Committee, which considers the various applications to the funds at scheduled meetings. In some circumstances, such as the Creative New Zealand funding, additional community members are co-opted on to the committee.

Council Mission & Vision

The Buller District Council is the territorial authority for the northern West Coast. Our goal is to promote the well-being of our local communities. We have a wide range of responsibilities under the Local Government Act.

Our mission is -

'To serve the residents of the Buller district, conscious of their needs, by providing facilities and services and creating an appropriate environment for progress and development.'

Mayor & Councillors

Councils are made up of members of the public elected in local authority elections held every three years. The Council is led by the Mayor, who provides leadership and direction to the council and community, and chairs the meetings.

Elected representatives represent and lead the community, setting policy, making decisions in the best interests of their communities.

The Buller District Council consists of 11 elected members, the Mayor and 10 Councillors. The district is divided into three wards - Seddon (2 elected representatives), Westport (6 elected representatives) and Inangahua (2 elected representatives). The Mayor is elected at large.

Job Vacancies

Buller is nestled at the top of the West Coast spanning the coastline from Karamea in the north to Punakaiki at the southern most end. The area of Buller goes inland as far as the top of the Lewis Pass, Maruia and Ikamatua.

The Buller District Council strives to be responsive to different needs and values and works with employees to maximise their potential.
