The Buller District Council's roading network consists of 586.0km of roads. Of these, 308.0km are sealed and 278.0km are unsealed.
As well as roads Council maintains 80.0km of footpaths, 143 bridges, 1618 culverts and more than 1300 streetlights.
A safe, efficient roading system is vital to Buller to assist in overcoming isolation, for health and safety, for communication, and to help promote development.
Roads in the Buller District are constructed and maintained by Transit New Zealand, who maintain all State Highways and Council who maintain all other public roads.
Funding for road maintenance and construction is shared between Council and Land Transport New Zealand, with Land Transport New Zealand subsidising 60% of costs.

From Mokihinui Bridge to Karamea and Oparara Bridge to Kohaihai, roads are classified as “Special Purpose". All work on this stretch of road is fully subsidised by Land Transport New Zealand.
Road maintenance is undertaken by external contractors, with Council overseeing the specifications of these contracts.
Council’s current Road Maintenance Contractor is WestReef Services Ltd.

If you wish to install a vehicle crossing, a stormwater, sewer or water service or any other structure in a road, you will need to complete an application to install. This application is for the construction of works in, on,along, over, across or under any road vested in the Buller District Council. Only approved contractors can complete such work. An applicaiton form and a list of approved contractors in the district is available on our website under 'Fees and forms'.
