The Buller District Council owns and operates a number of halls and pools throughout the Buller district to cater for the recreational activities of residents and visitors.
Most areas within the district have a hall under the control of a local Domain Board and frequently a sports ground.
Additional to these facilities are the primary facilities of public swimming pools and sports centres in Westport and Reefton.
The Westport swimming pool is a 33 yard, 6 lane heated and covered outdoor pool located within the Victoria Square complex in Westport. The compex also includes a heated toddlers pool.
The pool is normally operated between late September and late March by Buller District Council.
The Westport swimming pool was built in 1912 and has reached the end of its operational life. The 2008 summer season will be the last at the pool. Construction of a new sports and leisure centre has commenced and is due to open to the public in February 2009. Once the new facility is operational, the existing pool will close. Parts of the structure and plant will be reused.

The Reefton Swimming Pool is a five lane 33 yard covered and heated outdoor pool located on The Strand in the centre of town.

Council operates two primary sports halls/community centres within the Buller District, one in Westport and one in Reefton.
The Community Centre in Westport is centrally located in Palmerston Street. It is a single basketball court size facility, with changing facilities, a kitchen, raised stage area at the rear, ticketing facilities at the front and Sport Buller Offices. Buller District Council operates the community centre and can be contacted for all fees and charges or bookings, on 788 9111 ext 881.
The Reefton Community Centre is a large complex centrally located in Reefton.The building comprises a large single court basketball facility, which also accommodates smallbore rifle shooting facilities. Alongside the sports hall is a 250 seat cinema/theatre complex including ticketing facilities. Adjoining the two, is toilet and changing facilities.
