About Us

The Council staff is headed by a Chief Executive, who oversees a management team consisting of the managers of the four Council operational areas - Community Services, Operations, Regulatory and Corporate Services.

Chief Executive

Gary Murphy BSc Eng (Civil), Postgraduate Diploma Engineering, MIPENZ, Chartered Professional Engineer, AFNZIM

 
Born in Durban, South Africa and attended the University of Natal in Durban.  Worked for the Pietermaritzburg Municipality and the Kwazulu Natal Department of Transport before emigrating to New Zealand in 1996.  Joined Royds Consulting in Dunedin and later ran the Oamaru Office for Montgomery Watson.  Joined Buller District Council in 1999 as the Manager Operations.  Appointed Chief Executive of Buller District Council in November 2003.

Stephen Griffin, TIPENZ, Member of SOLGM, Member of Ingenium

 
Born and educated in Christchurch.  Worked for Poverty Bay and Westland Catchment Boards before moving to the Buller district.  Worked for Buller County Council as Assistant Engineer 1973 to 1980, Westport Borough Council as Borough Engineer 1980 to 1989 when Borough amalgamated to form Buller District Council.  Appointed Manager Operations January 2004.

Trish was previously employed by Community First Credit Union in Sydney in a general management relationship role.  Trish has a Masters in Management and a Diploma in Business Studies combined with over 20 years experience predominantly in a corporate setting.
