Archives

The Buller District Council Archives holds a variety of records relating to local government in the Buller district. The archives cover a significant period of history in the areas administered by the Buller District Council and its predecessors.

The archive collection consists of records of the current Buller District Council (after amalgamation in 1989), Buller County Council, Inangahua County Council and the Westport Borough Council (before almagamation in 1989). Some of these records date back as far as 1873. The records held in the Council's archives are available for research by members of the public.

Archives are irreplaceable documents. They cannot be borrowed, but can be studied in the district library and/or other Council offices. Photocopying of material is generally possible (subject to condition of the original document and copyright restrictions).

Inventories of the archive collection are available as printed lists and are also included as part of the library database which staff can search for you by key word.

Anyone wishing to use the archive collection is asked to make an appointment with staff at the Buller District library. You will need to provide details of what you wish to see, or the subject you are researching.

Simple requests are free of charge, for extended searches and research assistance a search fee may apply.

For more information give our staff at the library a call on (03) 788 8030.
